WHEN WINDOWS VISTA RAPED ME!

When I was a toddler (kid), I never liked COMPUTERS. To me it was a second IDIOT BOX after TELEVISION On the other hand I always found INTERNET almost weird. I was very reluctant in accepting COMPUTERS n INTERNET in my life. How ever "The D day" of my life came and I bought my first computer in the year 2004 and came along with it WINDOWS XP. Undoubtedly WINDOWS XP indeed is very very USER-FRIENDLY. Being scrupulous (honest), I do owe lot many things to WINDOWS XP and hence MICROSOFT and hence BILL GATES. Forthrightly(honestly) speaking I never like treating BILL GATES AND MICROSOFT LIKE A DIRT. After all They gave me vision to see and venerate (respect) the technology.

I started off my journey of discovering COMPUTERS FROM Windows XP. I never worked neither on WINDOWS 98 nor on WINDOWS 2000. I came to know about WINDOWS VISTA almost 2 years back. At that time name of WINDOWS VISTA was WINDOWS LONGHORN. I got thrilled. I even postponed my second PC by one year just to make my hardware compatible with WINDOWS VISTA.

I had very very high expectations from WINDOWS VISTA. But all my dreams dashed to ground and when I used VISTA FOR THE FIRST TIME almost one month back.

I AM USING WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE -64 BIT WORTH 16700/-

Here are the reasons why you should not use WINDOWS VISTA : ( THE PROBLEMS WHICH I FACED MAY BE EITHER DUE TO VISTA or due to the fact that I am using a 64 bit OS)

1. BULKY & POOR GRAPHICS. ( FOR A PERSON LIKE ME WHO HAS SEEN MANDRIVA AND MAC OS X, VISTA IS NOW WHERE IN COMPARISON)

2. VERY SLOW.

3. FIREFOX (WORLDS BEST BROWSER) FAILED TO INSTALL ADOBE FLASH PLAYER MAKING INTERNET SURFING A NIGHTMARE.

4. VLC PLAYER RESPONDED POORLY (WORLD'S BEST MEDIA PLAYER)

5. VIRTUAL DRIVE SOFTWARES LIKE DAEMON TOOLS, MAGIC ISO, POWER ISO never really got installed. Only after making me wait for weeks ULTRA ISO GOT INSTALLED.

6. VHDL SOFTWARE MODEL-SIM(ELECTRONCIS SOFTWARE) GOT INSTALLED BUT WHEN IT COMES TO SIMULATION IT CLOSES DOWN AUTOMATICALLY.

7. HIGH RAM REQUIREMENT (I AM USING 1 GB RAM STILL NOT SATISFIED)

8. EXPLORING THE OS IS VERY TOUGH.

9. WHEN EVER I TRY TO WORK ON COMMAND LINE MY COMP REBOOTS (I DON'T KNOW WHY)

10. MYSQL GOT INSTALLED BUT AFTER FEW DAYS IT NEVER WORKED AGAIN (GOD PLEASE SAVE MY SOUL)

11. MOST IMPORTANTLY EVERY THING IS SAME AS WINDOWS XP WITH ONLY DIFFERENCE THAT IT IS PRESENTED IN MORE GRAPHICAL AND BULKY MANNER. ITS LIKE OLD WINE IN A NEW GLASS.

12. START MENU IS HORRIBLE AND SO AS INTERNET EXPLORER.

FINAL DECREE (VERDICT): USE WINDOWS VISTA IF AND ONLY IF YOU HAVE 1 GB RAM (I RECOMMEND 2 GB HOWEVER). VISTA AND XP ARE ALMOST SAME WITH ONLY DIFFERENCE THAT BUGS IN VISTA ARE MORE (VISTA SOLEMNLY (EARNESTLY) NEED A RELEASE OF ITS FIRST SERVICE PACT). UNFORTUNATELY WINDOWS VISTA HAS USED THE OLD CLASSES OF WINDOWS XP AND HAS JUST ADDED FEW MORE EXTENDED SUB-CLASSES. (THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH OOPS [ OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING]LANGUAGES LIKE JAVA & C++ WOULD UNDERSTAND THIS TECHNICAL JARGON)

At Last WINDOWS VISTA is LAUNCHED

After nearly six years in development, Windows Vista has finally been released to the masses. New PCs will ship with it, those with upgrade vouchers will be cautiously cashing them in and the rest may be left wondering just what, if anything, they’re missing out on.

This latest version of Windows promises much: improved reliability and security, a redesigned user interface and the ability to use new hardware technologies.

As with Windows XP, Vista comes in various editions. There are two versions aimed at home users, one for business and one Ultimate edition that combines all the features of both. Corporate users will also be able to take advantage of the Enterprise Edition, while the Starter Edition is a version available only in what Microsoft calls emerging markets.

This may seem like a confusingly large number of options compared to the now familiar Home and Professional editions of XP, but let’s not forget Media Center Edition and Tablet PC Edition both of which contained special features now folded into the mainstream versions of Windows Vista.

So for most of us there are no more versions of Vista than there are XP, but there is more choice at retail where Media Center and Tablet PC Editions have not previously been available to buy without a PC.

In fact, this would be true were it not for that fact that all versions of Windows Vista except Starter Edition come in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you buy the full, retail product you’ll get both versions in the box and you’ll have to pick which one you want to install.

Microsoft launches 3-D maps for Web search

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. said on Monday it introduced three-dimensional maps of 15 U.S. cities in an effort to beef up its Web search offering to better compete with market leader Google Inc.

Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D compiles photo images to generate photo-realistic 3-D models of buildings and landscape in cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle and Dallas.

Trailing Google in the market for Internet search, Microsoft aims to drive traffic to its search services with a slew of features like local search, or maps.

"Local search is one of the fastest-growing categories online today, and adding features like 3-D will only help move the category further ahead and help Windows Live attract more customers and advertisers," said Steve Berkowitz, Microsoft's senior vice president in a statement.

Microsoft said it will offer advertisers the ability to display ads within the maps with virtual billboards above buildings or on the side of roads. The company also said it expects developers to pay fees to use the maps.

The company said its software is superior to Google Earth, a competing 3-D map technology, because Virtual Earth 3D displays realistic images of buildings instead of gray boxes. Microsoft's maps can also be accessed through a Web browser and does not require a separate application.

It was installation party in my college yesterday and it was a blast. I got so tired that I came home and just went to sleep. After many years I slept so long. When I woke up in the morning I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my inbox. Yes finally MICROSOFT IS ALL SET TO ROCK THIS CHRISTMAS WITH A MP3 PLAYER NAMED ZUNE MUCH SIMILAR TO APPLE'S IPOD. I do have high expectations from this device. Hope it won't disappoint me, anyways keeping my fingers crossed.

By the way these are some of its features:
It is predicted that the initial Zune device will be a handheld media player similar to the 5th generation hard drive based "video" iPods. The device being displayed currently is built by Toshiba, and appears to be a slightly modified version of the Toshiba Gigabeat S with a re-arranged controller layout^[5]. The unit sports a 3-3.5" LCD display, slightly larger than the iPod's, and has a built-in FM tuner which works with American, European, and Japanese frequencies. The device allegedly runs Windows Mobile on a 400MHz DSP processor^[6] (as does the Gigabeat S^[7]), and contains a 1.8 inch 30GB hard drive.^[8] The device will reportedly be available in Fall 2006 at select retailers for $299.^{[9]

Microsoft India has announced that Abishek Kumarasubramanian from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has been selected for a one-year internship with Bill Gates, and will work directly with Gates' Technical Assistant's team in Redmond.

The team comprises the world's best technologists, who formulate and drive Microsoft's technical strategy. Abishek was selected after seven months of rigorous competition under an initiative named Code4Bill, which was announced by Bill Gates during his last visit to India.

Over 20,000 students registered for the contest, which included three online technical challenges, and two rounds of one-to-one interviews. In the second last round, nineteen students interned with Microsoft India for a period of two months, out of whom five graduated to the last round, with one Abhishek finally emerging the winner.

Commenting on his win, Abishek Kumarasubramanian said, "Today, technology touches the lives of billions of people around-the-world, and it's amazing to think that I will be working with Microsoft, where I have an opportunity to impact each of these lives."

"Participating in Code4Bill has been an exhilarating experience, the competition has been tough and challenging, and has provided me an insight into cutting edge product development and innovation. Even though it will take some time for me to completely believe that I have been chosen to work with Bill Gates himself - I think that this is an unmatched opportunity, and am really excited about it," he said.

The first stage of the contest saw participants being given three online technical challenges. The top 10 percent based on the cumulative scores at the end of this round, then moved to the next stage. At this stage, the students underwent a round of one-to-one interviews with a technical interview panel. Next, nineteen selected students were required to intern with Microsoft Research, Bangalore; and Microsoft India Development Centre, Hyderabad.

These nineteen are from India's premier technical institutes, including IIT, Madras; IIT, Rourkee; Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, New Delhi; and the Army Institute of Technology, Pune.

During their internship, the students worked on next-generation technologies to develop solutions that address current day challenges. An application was developed by Udayan Khurana from the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala to help in the search for geographically-tagged information. Another Web application was developed by Pratik Stephen from the Army Institute of Technology, Pune to build on MSN Virtual Earth, allowing users to zoom-in and see minute details of a particular area.

In the last round, the top five participants faced a series of challenges administered by Bill Gates' former Technical Assistant.

Code4Bill was initiated as recognition of India's leadership in nurturing world-class technical talent, and is aimed at pre-final and final year students pursuing various technical streams across India. Incidentally, India is the first country where students have got this opportunity.

A First Look!

The next major version of Microsoft Office, (Office 2007 but what I'll affectionately call "Office Vista") is the single biggest change to come to Microsoft Office since, well, as far back as I can remember. The problem the Microsoft team was coming up against is that Office had gotten so complicated, so "bloated" and so complicated that most new feature requests made by users were for features already part of the package.

The new Office includes a new user interface across all the programs that make up the suite. The title bar has been altered to have its own unique glass style with buttons that make use of the most common features of the application. The menu bar has been largely jettisoned and replaced by what are being called "Ribbons". Until I saw the most recent version of the beta, I was skeptical as to whether this was going to work out. But having seen it in action, I am converted. It really is slick. Gone are the "we know what you want" type UI behaviors and in its place are interfaces that streamline the entire experience.

The ribbons allow users to do the kinds of things that most people want to do with as little work as they need. Power users in particular can be happy that there are tons of options that can greatly speed up common tasks.

The next version of Office will run both Windows Vista and Windows XP. On Windows XP, it looks a bit different (and in my opinion) quite fantastic.

As the above screenshot implies, blog posting (source: Microsoft's Joe Friend - not under NDA) is one of the features of Microsoft Word. While not good news necessarily to the third party programs that allow people to compose blog posts, it is good news to most users. When a user decides to create a blog with Microsoft Word, it takes care of the uploading of images and everything else to make the entire thing relatively painless.

And don't worry about what you upload being a bunch of whacky HTML, the Office team is working to ensure that what gets uploaded is the cleanest possible HTML.

The release date for Microsoft Office 2007 has not been announced officially. But beta 2 is due "soon". I don't know about you but I'm very excited. For years, Microsoft has kind of sat on its laurels with Office, adding bloat and complexity to it. Now, Microsoft seems very serious about going back and reinventing the world's most popular suite of office applications.

Vista to come out in eight editions late this year

Microsoft is planning to release six core editions of Vista, in addition to two 'N' versions, which will not be bundled with Windows Media Player as ordered by the European Union (EU) anti-trust regulators.

The different versions are Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Starter 2007; Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N, Windows Vista Business N, Windows Vista ultimate, Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Business.

Windows Starter 2007 is a counterpart of Microsoft Windows XP Starter Edition with limited features and is aimed at developing nations. The number of applications which can be run simultaneously is also limited. It also does not have the Vista branding as Aero graphics system is not included. It will be the only edition to ship in a 32-bit version. All the other will come in 64-bit versions.

Two editions are considered to be refurbished counterparts of Windows XP Home Edition and XP Pro. They are Home Basic Edition and Home Premium Edition respectively.

According to the company, Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate are unique. The former includes Media Center elements along with an extender functionality for Xbox 360 owners and the latter will incorporate everything that is present in all its other versions.

Meanwhile, Windows Vista Enterprise Edition is a version that will be available to Software Assurance customers only.

Some analysts say that notable omission is that of Small Business Edition of Vista. It was initially a part of Microsoft's Vista plans. Besides, no 64-bit specific Windows Vista version is also present in the list.

All of these Vista versions will include integrated games, as per information posted on Microsoft site.

Built-in support will be available for mobile devices in editions of the Vista Business, Home and Enterprise editions.

Microsoft has not announced a launch date for Vista, but they are expected to be launched at the end of November.

The first stage of the beta process for Internet Explorer 7 has begun—developer testing! The latest version of the world's most popular Web browser has been released for technical evaluation, feedback, and testing by software and Web site developers.

The Beta 1 release signals that Internet Explorer 7 has reached an important milestone, with a number of key new features and improvements, and is ready for website and application compatibility testing. This release is specifically intended for developers to confirm that existing applications and websites will work well with Internet Explorer 7, and provides an opportunity for developers to give feedback directly to the development team. There will be further refinement between Beta 1 and the final version.
Beta 1 is not intended for broad consumer trial and evaluation but it does offer a preview of some of the benefits that Internet Explorer 7 will offer customers including:

Now, with Windows Vista, Gates feels he finally has the right weapons to supplant the password as a means of verifying who is who on computers and over the Internet.

The new operating system, due later this year, introduces a concept called InfoCards that gives users a better way to manage the plethora of Internet login names and passwords, as well as lets third parties help in the verification process. Vista will also make it easier to log on to PCs using something stronger than a password alone, such as a smart card.

"We're laying the foundation for what we need," Gates said in a speech at the RSA Conference 2006 here.

Even with the advancements, Gates said he wasn't naive enough to think the password would go away overnight.

"I don't pretend that we are going to move away from passwords overnight, but over three or four years, for corporate systems, this change can and should happen," he said.

Replacing passwords is part of Microsoft's endeavor to simplify security, which Gates said is dearly needed. "We have an overly complex system today," he said. Vista and Microsoft's upcoming security products, such as Windows OneCare Live and Microsoft Client Protection, will make life easier for consumers, he said.

Microsoft has described InfoCard as a technology that gives users a single place to manage various authentication and payment information, in the same way a wallet holds multiple credit cards.

InfoCard is Microsoft's second try at an authentication technology after its largely failed Passport single sign-on service, unveiled in 1999.

InfoCard attempts to address the complaint many critics had with Passport, which was that people's information was managed by Microsoft instead of by the users themselves and the businesses with which they dealt.

Although Microsoft has talked about InfoCard, and early versions of the InfoCard code were released to developers last year, Gates' speech marked one of the first times Microsoft has demonstrated publicly just how it might work.

In a presentation, Microsoft showed how a consumer could use a self-generated InfoCard to log in to a car rental site and then use a separate InfoCard from a membership group to get a discount on the rental.

Halo 2 announced for Windows Vista

Microsoft has announced plans to bring its hit Xbox video game Halo 2 to the PC — but the game will only run on Windows Vista, Microsoft’s long-awaited update to the Windows operating system also known by its codename “Longhorn.” The game’s Mac status is still up in the air.

Microsoft plans to use an internal game studio to do the conversion of the hit game created by Microsoft’s own Bungie Studios. Halo 2 is a first-person shooter sequel to a game first seen by Mac enthusiasts at 1999’s Macworld Expo in New York City — shortly thereafter, Microsoft acquired Bungie and made Halo an Xbox-exclusive title.

Halo would later re-emerge for the Mac and PC, in 2003 — two years after it debuted on the Xbox. MacSoft licensed and published the Macintosh version of Halo, which shipped within weeks of its PC counterpart. That PC version was developed by Gearbox Software and based on Bungie’s original code.

The futuristic sci-fi game series follows the story of Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced human soldier who fights a war against The Covenant, a marauding collective of aliens bent on destroying humanity. Microsoft says the game has sold more than 14.5 million copies to date. It’s also spawned a movie, which is currently in pre-production and is due to be released in 2007.

The Windows Vista version of Halo 2 will combine the original game with its multiplayer map pack. Players will also have tools to build and customize their own multiplayer levels.

Microsoft did not state its reasons for making Halo 2’s PC debut exclusive to Windows Vista, but it’s thought that it may help drive adoption of the new operating system, which is due for release sometime in late 2006.

A MacSoft spokesman would not comment on his company’s plans for Halo 2.
